The Air-Conditioned Eden
Thursday, January 25, 2018
Not feeling well at all so I took a sick day today. Found a short yet overall comprehensive documentary on youTube titled The Air-Conditioned Eden - a British show from 1996 documenting the rise, fall, and beginnings of the resurrection of tiki culture in the U.S. A lot has happened in the 20+ years since.
Clips of interviews with author James Michener, musician and exotica guru Martin Denny, a young Sven Kirsten, and artist/anthropologist Jeffrey Vallance make this make this essential viewing for the tiki aficionado. Would love for there to be an expanded version of this.

Mermaid Lounge
The Mermaid Lounge opened up AGAIN yesterday afternoon. It's my first week back at work so I was looking to indulge in a little escapist fun, just like many mid-century Americans did years ago. The word indulge may be a little strong as my drinks were rather weak rum and Cokes, but the tiki mugs in the lounge, music of Arthur Lyman playing, and the reading of Sven Kirsten's The Book of Tiki, all helped add to the recreational atmosphere.
