Undertow - Gilbert Arizona

Saturday, April 1, 2023

Dale and I are out in Phoenix visiting Brenda, Irv, John, and Dianne, and we made it to Undertow's new location in Gilbert, Arizona. The above photo is from their website and is better than anything I could've taken due to the darkness of the place.

Our seating was set for 3:30 and we arrived just in time. Dianne, Dale, and I met John's son Pete at the restaurant. Pete lives only a few blocks from the bar. He's been quite excited to go for a while. I guess the Gilbert location been's open for about a year and he's been waiting for us to come out to visit before checking it out himself which is very sweet. Above photo is my own and was taken from the bar which is where we were seated.

Above photo is from Undertow's website and is a clearer shot of the barrels across from where we were seated sat the bar.

The booth that was behind where we were seated. I wish we could've been seated here since we could have seen each other better.

My first cocktail was the Missionary's Downfall which, according to the menu is from the 1940s and is attributed to Don the Beachcomber. This version was made from Flor de Cana 7 year aged Nicaraguan rum, Giffard peach, pineapple, mint, and honey. Nicely sweet, and not overly so. I adored it. So well made.

Dianne started with a non-alcoholic cocktail called the Captain's Apprentice. This featured a non-alcoholic spiced gin, green chartreuse, mint, strawberry, cream of coconut, lime leaf, and lime. She really liked it. Dale had a beer and Pete started with a Mai Tai.

For my second drink I went with the Three Dots and a Dash. A true classic which was sharper and had a wonderful hint of bitterness which really provided a great contrast with my first drink. Loved this one too.

Dianne's second drink was another non-alcoholic choice called the Shipless Sailor. This one featured non-alcoholic Jamaican rum, heirloom Alechemeres, orgeat, hibiscus, lime leaf, lime, and pineapple. I think she like this one just a little bit more from her first drink. Dale got another beer for his second round. Pete asked what I recommended for his second drink. I told him the get what I was having, the Three Dots and a Dash, because it complemented the sweetness of the first drink. He loved it.

I asked the bartender if they had any tiki mugs for sale and he brought out the little guy pictured above to show me. He was hand carved and made into a mold. The tiki mugs were a limited edition of only 500 mugs. I made him mine. He was to cool not to pass up. Dianne marveled at the detail and liked how his eyes would follow you when you look at him.

The Undertow bar experience was slightly similar to that of Pagan Idol in San Francisco. The bar takes place in the hold of a ship which sets sail after being seated. When you reach port after your hour and a half seating time you're expected to exit the ship. The experience at Pagan Idol takes you a port as well but you can stay as long as you like.

We all had a great time and it was worth the hour and a half drive to get to Gilbert from Peoria.

Everything was amazing: the drinks; the service; the decor; the atmosphere. We all felt the same way. I can't wait to go back.

Until next time....

Lucky Cricket 3 for 2019

Sunday, May 5, 2019

After church today Dale and I decided to pick up some brunch but we weren't too excited about our usual options. I suggested Lucky Cricket and Dale pounced on the idea.

I started out with the Tiki Reviver for my first cocktail. The menu describes it thusly: "Rich and mystifying. Rums, coconut, pineapple, lime and spiked with coffee liqueur." It's my new favorite.

Of course I purchased the mug. The website describes as such: "The 'Cannibal King' mug designed by Ken Ruzic. With a headdress of skulls and a hungry scowl, the king of the cannibals will add the perfect atmosphere of dark royalty to any tropical shindig. This mug stands at a commanding 8" in height and has a capacity for 19 oz. of your favorite libation."

We ordered delicious things from the menu to share and we finished with some soft serve swirl.

Lucky Cricket has quite a puffer fish collection.

Interesting tikis...

...and more...

More random shots of art around the bar.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 8

Before departing I stopped by the gift shop and picked up a few new tiki mugs for my collection. As stated in an earlier post, I believe I'm now at 49 mugs in all.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 6

For my second drink I went with the Native's Curse which is one of the last drinks I hadn't tried yet. According to the drink menu the Native's Curse is described as follows, "Unwelcome intruders to the forbidden island are cursed by the natives with a terrible spell... neverending boredom. To reverse the curse natives drink an elixir of West Indies rum, passion fruit, coconut, and citrus. Circa 1956." The coconut in the drink is very pronounced and that's a very good thing.

I sat at my favorite spot at the bar. The windows and doors were open to the patio and there was a lovely breeze blowing in.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 5

Monday, August 13, 2018

So, the birthday weekend continues. I had a union meeting today and stopped my Psycho Suzi's afterward for lunch. While walking by the union hall I noticed this ship in the back of the building next door. I think it would be a great addition to anyone's back yard tiki bar!

When I got to Suzi's I immediately ordered a Crummy Scoundrel (one of my favorites). Like I've mentioned before there's something carbonated in it and I think it might be ginger ale.

To eat I ordered the mac and cheese bake with added bacon. Always delicious.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 4

Friday, August 10, 2018
Taken in the Psycho Suzi's gift shop.
After exploring the patio I headed back inside to the gift shop for a couple more birthday presents.

I have a couple of other bird mugs like this one. One is green and one is yellow. Now I can add this nice blue one to the collection.

This coconut mug is what the Crummy Scoundrel come in. It's not the most exciting looking tiki mug but it's weighty and the full shape of it feel really good in one's hand.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 3

I sat at the bar just a seat over from the drink station where the servers pick up cocktails for patrons. One server asked the bartenders for a drink called and Irish Hand Grenade. Neither of the two bartenders knew how to make it. The server asked them if they could google it and find a youTube video for instructions as she really wanted to make sure her customer on the patio had a pleasant experience. In the end, they were able to fix one up. It looked something like what's pictured above. The "Irish" in the name refers to the drinks Irish ingredients: typically Guinness stout, Bailey's Irish Cream, and Jameson Irish whiskey. The drink was originally referred to as the Irish Car Bomb but the name has changed as some find the original designation offensive. I can see why. I just have a hard time understanding why someone would come to a tiki bar and not order a tiki drink. But that's just me.

Speaking of the patio I got some cool pictures of tikis out there.

Birthday Weekend - Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge Part 2

After the Crummy Scoundrel I ordered the Hawaiian Surf pizza and for my second tiki cocktail I went with the Evil Headhunter which the drink menu describes as follows, "Lured into the jungle by wafts of dark rum, pineapple, fresh line, almonds, and mysterious drums, you trip head first into a hole. You know what happens next.  Circa 1959."

As part of my birthday weekend I took myself to lunch at Psycho Suzi's. I started out with one of my favorite drinks there, the Crummy Scoundrel. The drink menu describes it as follows, "An absurd blend of amusing flavors and pirate-like fun... but with no pirates. Blackberry, hibiscus, banana, fresh lime. Circa 1972." The drink also has something carbonated in it which makes it especially refreshing.

I heard some cool surf music playing and when I Shazamed it it turned out to be an awesome surf medley titled, what else, Surf Medley by Junior Brown. Of course I downloaded it and added it to my surf playlist on iTunes.
