Big Kahuna Bash 2024 Part 3

 Saturday, July 27, 2024

For my third drink I got the Big Kahuna which the menu described as: "A tasty blend of dark rum, citrus, honey and passion fruit. Who's the Big Kahuna? You're the Big Kahuna!" Dale got another Coors Light. Please note: Dale and I were both drinking lots of water to combat the heat and humidity. We met a nice woman named Tea who was sitting next to us at the bar. It was fun chatting with her.

We then headed out to listen to the Swongos.

The Swongos are an instrumental surf, spy, and exotica band. We've seen them before and they never disappoint.

I downloaded some of their music.

Big Kahuna Bash 2024 Part 2

Dale and I found a nice spot to sit at the bar. Where we were getting a little breeze as were were close to some air conditioning vents. The bar was pretty hot and humid cuz they were keeping the back door open for access to the patio.

For my second drink I had the Mai Tai which the menu described as: "A classic exotic cocktail that is quintessential in tiki culture. Fresh lime, orgeat, orange curacao, dark rum, and Hart & Son 1804!

Big Kahuna Bash 2024 Part 1

Dale and I headed out for Grumpy's Northeast for the Big Kahuna Bash #6. It was a hot AND humid day.

Dale and I got to Grumpy's around 3:30. It was hot and humid in the bar as well due to having the back door open allowing access to the patiio.

Dale ordered beer. For my first drink I ordered the Grumpy's Grog. This drink was desribed on the menu as: "A drink inspired by the founder of tiki - Donn Beach. A Demerara rum, lime juice, Donn's Mix and your transported to the islands."

Rum and Cigar

Saturday, March 25, 2023

Had a cigar this afternoon and a tiki drink to complement it. Had a little Captain Morgan on hand. Added some orgeat, Apersol, bitters, orange/pineapple juice, and topped it off blackberry Bubly. Not bad for improvising.

Celebrating A Birthday

I had a birthday recently and Mom and Dale and I  celebrated by heading to Psycho Suzi’s to sit on their glorious patio.

For my first drink I had the Paralyzed Politician. I believe it used to go by the Paralyzed Polynesian. Here’s how it was describe on the menu:

I didn’t get it in the mug (I already have it) but here’s how it looked in a regular glass:

Quite tasty. Dale and Mom had beer.

In the above photo you can see Mom and Dale in the lower right quadrant. Dale was a little pissy that they didn’t have table service so I went and ordered the food from the bar which is where I took the picture from while waiting in line. Dale got a hamburger and Mom and I shared a Hawaiian pizza. We also had some appetizers (tater tots and calamari). It was a gorgeous evening to sit on the patio overlooking the Mississippi River.

For my second cocktail I got the Psychotic Suzi Shipwreck (see above) which I believe used to go by the Psychotic Suzi.

I did not get the drink in the collectible mug (I already have it). However, the presentation was still quite lovely in a regular glass (see above).

Dale cheered up especially once we got a little food in him and a good time was had by all.

Especially me.

Quarantiki - Porch Life/Mermaid Lounge

Sunday, July 19, 2020

Dale and I each got a LOT of steps in today partly due to our walk around Lake Nokomis. We believe that all the way around is about 2.8 miles. Again, much more pleasant day than yesterday. Sunny, lower temps, and MUCH less humid along with a glorious breeze that pretty much lasted the whole day.

Due to the wonderful temps and awesome breeze we turned off the air conditioning and opened up the house. It was so pleasant to have the windows open on the porch for cocktail hour. Dale had wine and I made a Joey's Orange Speedo (Ounce and a half each of grapefruit juice, orange curaçao, rum, and one ounce of falernum topped off with club soda). I shake the first three ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker, strain into a lowball glass, add the ice from the shaker then add the club soda and stir.

Downloaded another album by Augie Colon.

Quarantiki - Jungle Bird

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

I tried a new one tonight - the Jungle Bird which was crafted by rum expert Shannon Mustipher. This gem contains pot still Jamaican rum (I used Hamilton, which was recommended in the recipe), Campari (liqueur from the infusion of herbs and fruit - I've never used before), pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice. I mixed it as precisely as I could to the exact measurements in the recipe and the result was quite splendid. Dale, who's not a fan of hard liquor or mixed drinks, took a sip and even he liked it. To him tropical cocktails taste over-sweet but this one had a sharpness and bite to it that really counteracted the sweetness.

Warmish and sunny evening. Dale and I sat on the porch.

Quarantiki - Easter Daiquiri

Sunday, April 12, 2020

Easter today and a rather uneventful one at that. Snowy and stuck inside except to shovel.

Daiquiri for cocktail hour - Shannon Mustipher's Floridita recipe. That lifted my spirits a little.

Feeling' Fall - Cigars, Cocktails, Playlists

Sunday, September 22, 2019

Fall is on the way. Astrological fall starts tomorrow but today we just came off a run of hot, sticky July-like weather. Today however was mid-60s, cloudy, and rainy in the afternoon. I set up for a cigar in the garage and lit up after making a hula-hula cocktail. I also worked on one of my tiki themed playlists.

Birthday Boy

Monday, August 12, 2019

I recently celebrated a birthday. It was an amazing day and I had a chance to spend a little of it in the backyard with a cigar, a cocktail, and the one and only Athena.

Dale dropped by the yard for a little bit before he took me out to dinner.

Athena enjoyed being outside.

All in all, a great birthday.

Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville

Saturday, July 27, 2019

This afternoon Dale and I checked out the Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville. We had quite a great time. We started out with dinner in the restaurant.

Dale started with a beer.

The Tilted Tiki in Stillwater did the tiki drinks for the event. I started with The Surfin' Bird which the menu described as: "A wave of exotic flavors in dark rum, herbs, fresh pineapple and lime juices. Named after the Minnesota Surf Legends - The Trashmen!" Very tasty.

For my second drink I went with the Big Kahuna which the menu described as: "The big, bold tiki favorite. A tasty blend of rum, citrus, honey and passion fruit!" A little too sweet for my taste. Odd because the Tilted Tiki's drinks are generally really well made and NOT over-sweet. I'm wondering if they did them in large batches just for this event.

There was also a Mai-Tai on the tiki drink menu which I didn't have a chance to try. For dinner Dale had the Impossible Burger which was actually meatless. He loved it and said it would  have otherwise fooled him! I went with the Bangkok Chicken Sammy. It was a chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce and pineapple. Very yummy. Shag walked by our booth as we were eating and I said hello.

Hot Pastrami

After dinner we had a chance to walk around and check things out. We listened to the band Hot Pastrami play. They were quite fun.

Works by Shag on display upstairs at Grumpy's

Shag was the host of the whole event and had an art show going on upstairs.

Out side we found the vendor's booths so I had a chance to shop for souvenirs. Dale caught me looking around The Black Lagoon's Room's booth in the above photo.

After my shopping I took this photo of Dale with some images by Shag in the patio windows. He mentioned to me a few different times during our visit what a good time he was having. I'm glad!

I brought home some souvenirs including a pint glass and also two enamel pins by Artis Pete Klockau of Milwaukee, Wisconsin whom I follow on Instagram as The  Black Lagoon Room. The pin on the right is also shown below.

This pin was designed exclusively for The Big Kahuna Bash and only 100 were made!

I also picked up a couple of posters. One looks just like the image above but without the date across it.

I also picked up this poster as well.

The folks from The Black Lagoon Room. Such friendly folks! Photo not mine but from Instagram.
