Spring Break 2024 - The Tilted Tiki

Dale surprised me by wanting make a trip to the Tilted Tiki in Stillwater this Spring Break. We were there by 4:30 and it was still pretty quiet. They had opened at 4:00. 

I started out with the Painkiller. The menu description said, "Soothe yourself with a tropical vacation in a glass. British Navy rum, coconut, orange and nutmeg."

Dale had wine. 

A couple of large video screens showed undersea life. 

We started out with the coconut shrimp. It was very hot and very delicious. 

For my second drink I orderd the Mai Tai which the menu stated was "Trader Vic's drink of legend! Lime juice, almond, orange liqueur, and hearty Rum." It came in the cool gold metalic tiki mug shown above. 

Dale ordered more wine. 

For dinner I had the tiki burger and Dale had the grilled cheese. The Jorgensen's provided live music. I especially liked their version of Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby. 

Coolish out but a beautifully sunny day. Would be fun to come back when it's a bit warmer and the live music is outside.

Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville

This afternoon Dale and I checked out the Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville. We had quite a great time. We started out with dinner in the restaurant. 

Dale started with a beer.

The Tilted Tiki in Stillwater did the tiki drinks for the event. I started with The Surfin' Bird which the menu described as: "A wave of exotic flavors in dark rum, herbs, fresh pineapple and lime juices. Named after the Minnesota Surf Legends - The Trashmen!" Very tasty.

For my second drink I went with the Big Kahuna which the menu described as: "The big, bold tiki favorite. A tasty blend of rum, citrus, honey and passion fruit!" A little too sweet for my taste. Odd because the Tilted Tiki's drinks are generally really well made and NOT over-sweet. I'm wondering if they did them in large batches just for this event. 

There was also a Mai-Tai on the tiki drink menu which I didn't have a chance to try. For dinner Dale had the Impossible Burger which was actually meatless. He loved it and said it would  have otherwise fooled him! I went with the Bangkok Chicken Sammy. It was a chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce and pineapple. Very yummy. Shag walked by our booth as we were eating and I said hello.

After dinner we had a chance to walk around and check things out. We listened to the band Hot Pastrami play. They were quite fun.

Shag was the host of the whole event and had an art show going on upstairs. 

Out side we found the vendor's booths so I had a chance to shop for souvenirs. Dale caught me looking around The Black Lagoon's Room's booth in the above photo.

After my shopping I took this photo of Dale with some images by Shag in the patio windows. He mentioned to me a few different times during our visit what a good time he was having. I'm glad!

I brought home some souvenirs including a pint glass and also two enamel pins by Artis Pete Klockau of Milwaukee, Wisconsin whom I follow on Instagram as The  Black Lagoon Room. The pin on the right is also shown below. 

This pin was designed exclusively for The Big Kahuna Bash and only 100 were made!

I also picked up a couple of posters. One looks just like the image above but without the date across it.

Back in November, Noel and I made a run out to Afton to do some pre-Christmas shopping. We stopped in Stillwater for lunch at the Tilted Tiki.

I ordered myself another Tilted Hawaiian due to loving it so much on my last visit.  I also got the shrimp po boy again cuz it was just that good.

Recently through Critic I discovered that Minnesota has a new tiki bar - The Tilted Tiki.  Although a slight jaunt from Minneapolis it's well worth the trip. On break for MEA weekend, Dale and I decided to make the trip to Stillwater to give it a go. The long weekend has been gorgeous so far with highs in the upper 70s. It was 77 degrees in Minneapolis when we left. The bar opened just under a year ago in November of 2016. 

We discovered a coconut carving of a monkey as part of the Tilted Tiki's decor. 

Our friend Julie bought one of these for us at a gas station in Florida more than 20 years ago on a trip  she took there. It was a gag so we named it Amy and regifted it to her slightly destroyed. The regifting went on for a couple of years with Amy in slightly worse shape each time.

Before making the trip I checked out the Tilted Tiki's drink menu online and decided I'd start with the Mai Tai. More to follow. It's fantastic by the way...

The Tilted Tiki is located in an old building on Stillwater's Main Street. The architecture of the building doesn't really go with tiki but they do a great job of making it all work with the tiki-centric decor.

The bar has a fantastic patio. When Dale and I arrived at the restaurant there was no one sitting inside but the outside was packed. Temperatures in the upper 70s will do that I guess.

For my first drink I ordered their Mai Tai which was insanely good. The drink menu blurb describes it as "Vic Bergeron's drink of legend - Mai Tai literally means 'The Best.' The finest most authentic Mai Tai in Minnesota." I'd say they're right.

Dale order a beer. A Fulton Lonely Blonde to be exact which is an American blonde ale.

I ordered the shrimp poor boy for lunch which was delicious by the way.

For my second tiki drink I ordered the Tilted Hawaiian.   Yum. Yum. Yum. The drink menu blurb for the drink says: "Dive into the refreshing blue waters of Hawaii and enjoy the flavors of rum, pineapple and coconut." I was drawn to its blue color which reminded me of the Blue Hawaiians I used to order back in the 1980s.
