Hula Hula Cocktail

Saturday, July 13, 2024

Before cocktail hour with Dale I had a cigar out in the garage.

Finished up the Blue Hawaiian I had left over from the other night.

Brought back the Hula Hula Cocktail. It's been a while.

This is one of the first tiki drinks I made on my own because it's so simple. It's one part gin (I used Bombay Sapphire), one part orange curacao, and one part orange juice.

Dale and I listened to Ultra Lounge Vol. 1: Mondo Exotica. It's been a while since I've listened to this one. It's one of the best Exotica samplers out there.

Also listened to Ultra Lounge: Hey Bartender which is lots of fun as well.

Quarantiki - Cigar Time

Monday, March 31, 2020

It's spring break but today is the first day I've taken off in a couple weeks. Worked the past couple weekends  which I only do rarely.

Sunny 55 degree day which allowed me to sit in the yard. Smoked an Asylum 13 and drank some hula hula cocktails.

The Hula Hula Cocktail

This in not social distancing. This is cigar distancing.
So great to take some time off of work and be outside in the yard. The last couple weeks of work have been laden with confusion and uncertainty. Some of it is related to navigating working remotely for the first time and a lot of it is just not having concrete guidelines for what the distance learning we're supposed to be setting up is supposed to look like.

Quarantiki - Hula Hula Cocktail

Saturday, March 28, 2020

Such was my success with using fresh lime juice in the daiquiri I made the other day I decided to make one of my favorite tiki drinks, the  hula hula cocktail from Sippin' Safari by Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, using fresh orange juice instead of from the carton. Wow, what a difference - so much smoother tasting and refreshing. I was a bit surprised to find out that an average sized orange only produces about a half ounce of juice.

This one's waiting patiently to see if she'll be lucky enough to get a blue corn chip.

Quarantiki - Sunday Showtunes

Sunday, March 22, 2020

I believe it's important to have things to look forward to and especially so during times of uncertainty.  I created an event for Dale and me based on a beer bust called Sunday Showtunes that occurs weekly at a local bar. This is more of a cocktail & wine event as Dale and I drink that rather than beer. We listened to the 1996 Broadway revival cast album of Chicago and also the soundtrack of the 2002 film. I had a hula hula cocktail and Dale drank wine.

Quarantiki - End of the Week

Friday, March 20, 2020

Four days of social distancing and staying home except for shopping for essential items. We headed to the grocery store today but also made a stop at the liquor store (talk about essential items). I picked up some gin and orange curaƧao.

It's been interesting. Dale's working from home too. I never thought we'd be able to have work lunches but that's a part of the new reality. Had a couple hula hula cocktails tonight. Very refreshing. Very delicious.

Feeling' Fall - Cigars, Cocktails, Playlists

Sunday, September 22, 2019

Fall is on the way. Astrological fall starts tomorrow but today we just came off a run of hot, sticky July-like weather. Today however was mid-60s, cloudy, and rainy in the afternoon. I set up for a cigar in the garage and lit up after making a hula-hula cocktail. I also worked on one of my tiki themed playlists.

Great Afternoon for a Cigar

Monday, July 24, 2019

Aloha shirt, exotica music, an Asylum 13 cigar, and a Hula Hula cocktail.

Sat out in the backyard on a gorgeous summer afternoon. Dale and Athena joined me once Dale was back from a bike ride.

A Lovely Spring Day

Sunday, May 26, 2019

A beautiful spring day today perfect for sitting out in the back yard with a ...

cocktail, with...

Blake and Josh, and...

a cigar, AND...

Athena, AND, of course...

the one and only DALE!!! Enjoying his presence before he heads up north for a month.

I made my evolving recipe of a Hula Hula Cocktail. This time I used one part orange juice, one part orange Curacao, and one part Myer's rum. Yum.

Cigar & Tiki Cocktail Time

Saturday, May 4, 2019

The weather's been cruddy lately but I got another beautiful Saturday that's helping to keep hope alive. Hula Hula Cocktail with Myer's rum.

Cigar time.

Punch cigar.

Looked some more through the book from Frankie's Tiki Room. In search of recipes that are manageable and not too fussy to make. Quest was successful as I found quite a few.

Brad seemed to have a great time.

Cigar & Tiki Cocktail Time

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

The weather's been gloomy and cool since our return from the Desert Southwest. Once in a while we get a nice day like today and I feel I need to take advantage of it even if it's a weekday.

Great afternoon for a cigar in the yard and a variation of the Hula Hula Cocktail.

This one is made with rum rather than gin.

I also had a chance to look through the book _____ which I picked up at Frankie's Tiki Lounge in Las Vegas. The book is by ______ and has the recipes for all of the drinks at Frankie's.

My cigar this afternoon is an Asylum 13. It was nice to see some sun for a change and sit in it.

Hula Hula Cocktails

Thursday, January 31, 2019

This week I experienced something I've never experienced before. Four days in a row off of school due to weather. We had Monday off due to snow although it was only six inches and I don't think they really needed to call it off but I'm just not gonna complain. Tuesday thru today was due to cold and that was justified because it was really COLD AS HELL FROZEN OVER. Above shows the temperature yesterday morning.

Anyway I've tried to go from this (see above).

To this (see above). With the help of mixing some Hula Hula Cocktails.

The above version is a rum Hula Hula with one part rum (El Dorado) one part orange curacao (dry curacao by Pierre Ferrand) and one part orange juice.

I'm trying to develop a signature version of this cocktail and I've gone with lots of different variations. Pictured above is one part orange curacao (dry curacao by Pierre Ferrand), one part orange juice, and one part vodka (Three Olives).

Here's a Hula Hula with all the original ingredients of the recipe. One part OJ, one part gin (I used Beefeater), and one part orange curacao (dry curacao by Pierre Ferrand). Note the fish tiki mug which I purchased at my last visit to Psycho Suzi's.

Finally, I think what's pictured above could be a different signature cocktail. It's got OJ, orange curacao, Cointreau, and brandy. It's probably more a variation on a Sidecar. I'll keep on working on it and maybe call it a Joey's Surfin' Sidecar. [Please note: the above cocktails were not consumed on the same day. I'm not that bad.]
