Summer 2025 - Orange Speedos for Pride

 Friday, May 27, 2025

Warren and I went to the Eagle's patio party for Pride this afternoon. Afterward we headed back to my place and met up with Dale and Gary for pizza from Pizza Luce.

I made Orange Speedos for Warren and me. Didn't follow the recipe exactly (I usually don't) but they were still delicous. Used Aperol to top them off.

Joey's Orange Speedo

We had Warren over not to long ago and I made my signature tiki cocktail, the Joey's Orange Speedo.

Here's how I made it this time:

3 ounces orange juice (I often use grapefruit juice)

1 1/2 ounces rum (I used Myer's)

1 ounce orange curacao

(recipe calls for falernum but I couldn't find it although later I notice it was in the basement with some other extra booze)

I topped it off with Aperol (although I originally used club soda and I'll sometime use Bubly brand charged water)

Warren loved it.

It's Been Awhile

Saturday, April 2, 2022

The last couple years have been challenging to say the least and the last month has been a whirlwind. Three weeks of being on strike followed by one week back in school has been rewarding but exhausting. Finally on spring break and celebrated with a mini Macanudo this afternoon.

We had Warren over for dinner tonight. He brought tacos and we watched Who Slew Auntie Roo with Shelley Winters which was a TRIP.

Made some Joey's Orange Speedos for Warren and myself. It's been ages and they turned out quite well. Warren really loves 'em.

Today was the first day of Spring Break 2022 and I'm so looking forward to resting.

We'll be headed to Arizona soon to visit Brenda, Irv, Dianne, and John. Looking forward to some tropical cocktails.

Tiki Lights

Friday, June 21, 2019

Warren and I stopped by Michael's place for a pre-happy hour drink. We sat on his deck and I noticed the solar powered tiki lights. He said he got them at Menard's.

The Island Groove

This photo showed up recently on Instagram. It was posted to the Tonga Room's account with the caption:

"Our beloved house band, @theislandgroove, plays nightly from 8:00 pm. Join us tonight for great live music, cocktails and dancing."

When I was there a few years ago with Warren and Scott, we saw the floating stage but we were there early enough that the band wasn't playing. Would have loved to have seen them. Here are some photos I took in February of 2016 when I was there:
It actually rains in the Tonga Room's lagoon. You can kind of see it here.

Smuggler's Cove - An Attempted Visit

Saturday, February 18, 2017

For my annual trip to visit Warren in California I decided to try and visit a couple of notable San Francisco Tiki Bars. Warren, Scott, and I got into the city around 3:00 p.m. and settled in at Twin Peaks for our first cocktail. At around 5 pm we called for an Uber to take us to Smuggler's Cove and arrived around 5:30 only to find a long line out the door which wasn't moving.  We found out from someone else in line that staff let a group in right when they opened at 5:00. They were filled to capacity and that they'd start letting more folks in at 6 p.m. but it would be one in one out. We decided to head over to Pagan Idol.

Flashback Friday

Leaving today today to visit Warren in California. Our plan is to visit a few tiki bars. This photo is from a visit a couple of years ago when I visited him there and we went to Nick's, a fabulous old school supper club, on the Pacific between Half Moon Bay and San Francisco. The drink pictured is called the Bermuda Bomb

Throwback Thursday - Tonga Room

Last year on a trip to California to visit my friend Warren, we visited the Tonga Room in San Francisco. We ordered Mai Tais which turned out to be most fabulous and took in the sights and sounds of the place. What a whole bunch of fun. The place had a pool in the middle of it with a floating stage. Unfortunately there were no musicians playing on it at the time. In addition to all this, it was fixed up to rain over the pool every so often. How cool is that? I found the above photo on Instagram today.

Tiki Bar Tour

Sunday, February 5, 2017

In a couple weeks I'll be making a California trip to visit my friend Warren who winters there. I'll be staying with him and his friend Scott who lives in Half Moon Bay. We plan to take a trip into San Francisco to visit a few tiki bars. I texted this graphic I made to Warren a few days ago to let him know which bars are at the top of my list.
