Shag has been offering coloring sheets lately. I shaded these in with Colorfy and then made a collage with BeFunky.

Quarantiki - Cigar Time

Monday, March 31, 2020

It's spring break but today is the first day I've taken off in a couple weeks. Worked the past couple weekends  which I only do rarely.

Sunny 55 degree day which allowed me to sit in the yard. Smoked an Asylum 13 and drank some hula hula cocktails.

The Hula Hula Cocktail

This in not social distancing. This is cigar distancing.
So great to take some time off of work and be outside in the yard. The last couple weeks of work have been laden with confusion and uncertainty. Some of it is related to navigating working remotely for the first time and a lot of it is just not having concrete guidelines for what the distance learning we're supposed to be setting up is supposed to look like.

Quarantiki - Hula Hula Cocktail

Saturday, March 28, 2020

Such was my success with using fresh lime juice in the daiquiri I made the other day I decided to make one of my favorite tiki drinks, the  hula hula cocktail from Sippin' Safari by Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, using fresh orange juice instead of from the carton. Wow, what a difference - so much smoother tasting and refreshing. I was a bit surprised to find out that an average sized orange only produces about a half ounce of juice.

This one's waiting patiently to see if she'll be lucky enough to get a blue corn chip.

Quarantiki - Floridita Daiquiri

Wednesday, March 26, 2020

The drink from Shannon Mustipher's book I chose to make is the Floridity Daiquiri. Now I've never made a daiquiri before and if I've ever had one it was a long time ago. Anyway, this one seemed pretty simple to put together. It calls for 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice, 1 bar spoon granulated sugar, and 2 ounces aged white rum.

I upped the lime juice to one full ounce, used a tablespoon of bakers sugar, and added 1 extra ounce of the aged white rum (I used Diplomatico Planas - recommended by Mustipher).

The end result was simply fantastic. I can't believe something that simple could be that good! The rum was great, the sugar added a certain effervescence, and the fresh lime juice added a wonderful sharpness and tang to the whole thing!

This is one I'm definitely gonna make again!

Quarantiki - Diplomatico Planas and Tiki Tuesday

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

How was work today? Still navigating being a teacher with no students around. It's kinda weird. Stopped by the liquor and grocery stores for some aged white rum and limes. I plan on making a daiquiri for cocktail hour tomorrow.

Oh, and here's a mug from my collection for Tiki Tuesday.

Quarantiki - Sunday Showtunes

Sunday, March 22, 2020

I believe it's important to have things to look forward to and especially so during times of uncertainty.  I created an event for Dale and me based on a beer bust called Sunday Showtunes that occurs weekly at a local bar. This is more of a cocktail & wine event as Dale and I drink that rather than beer. We listened to the 1996 Broadway revival cast album of Chicago and also the soundtrack of the 2002 film. I had a hula hula cocktail and Dale drank wine.

Quarantiki - End of the Week

Friday, March 20, 2020

Four days of social distancing and staying home except for shopping for essential items. We headed to the grocery store today but also made a stop at the liquor store (talk about essential items). I picked up some gin and orange curaƧao.

It's been interesting. Dale's working from home too. I never thought we'd be able to have work lunches but that's a part of the new reality. Had a couple hula hula cocktails tonight. Very refreshing. Very delicious.

Quarantiki - St. Patrick's Day 2020

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Wow. So much has changed in the U,S. since I last posted. Two days ago the governor of Minnesota ordered all schools closed starting tomorrow. My district, however, started their closure today. We had school yesterday but only 5 of my students showed up.

Decided to have a cocktail today for St. Patrick's day. I only had rum and OJ on hand so I mixed that together. Not very Irish, but what the heck. Also, calling it tiki is a bit of a stretch but I guess we work with what we've got.

Spring break starts at the end of next week and Dale and I were supposed to leave for Arizona. We've decided to cancel due to the epidemic. It's a bummer as we were going to explore some tiki bars in Phoenix and also Palm Springs. Decided I'll mix up some tiki drinks here so I've been reading Tiki - Modern Tropical Cocktails by Shannon Mustipher to get some ideas. It's a great book and beautifully photographed.
