Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville

Saturday, July 27, 2019

Dale and I attended the Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville tonight and had a great time.

The Black Widows

We were hoping to see The Black Widows and Tony Adreason from The Trashmen but they played later than we were able to stay.

However, we were able to catch Hot Pastrami which was two tons of fun. Awesome band. More information about our experience at the event in the following post.

Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville

Saturday, July 27, 2019

This afternoon Dale and I checked out the Big Kahuna Bash at Grumpy's in Roseville. We had quite a great time. We started out with dinner in the restaurant.

Dale started with a beer.

The Tilted Tiki in Stillwater did the tiki drinks for the event. I started with The Surfin' Bird which the menu described as: "A wave of exotic flavors in dark rum, herbs, fresh pineapple and lime juices. Named after the Minnesota Surf Legends - The Trashmen!" Very tasty.

For my second drink I went with the Big Kahuna which the menu described as: "The big, bold tiki favorite. A tasty blend of rum, citrus, honey and passion fruit!" A little too sweet for my taste. Odd because the Tilted Tiki's drinks are generally really well made and NOT over-sweet. I'm wondering if they did them in large batches just for this event.

There was also a Mai-Tai on the tiki drink menu which I didn't have a chance to try. For dinner Dale had the Impossible Burger which was actually meatless. He loved it and said it would  have otherwise fooled him! I went with the Bangkok Chicken Sammy. It was a chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce and pineapple. Very yummy. Shag walked by our booth as we were eating and I said hello.

Hot Pastrami

After dinner we had a chance to walk around and check things out. We listened to the band Hot Pastrami play. They were quite fun.

Works by Shag on display upstairs at Grumpy's

Shag was the host of the whole event and had an art show going on upstairs.

Out side we found the vendor's booths so I had a chance to shop for souvenirs. Dale caught me looking around The Black Lagoon's Room's booth in the above photo.

After my shopping I took this photo of Dale with some images by Shag in the patio windows. He mentioned to me a few different times during our visit what a good time he was having. I'm glad!

I brought home some souvenirs including a pint glass and also two enamel pins by Artis Pete Klockau of Milwaukee, Wisconsin whom I follow on Instagram as The  Black Lagoon Room. The pin on the right is also shown below.

This pin was designed exclusively for The Big Kahuna Bash and only 100 were made!

I also picked up a couple of posters. One looks just like the image above but without the date across it.

I also picked up this poster as well.

The folks from The Black Lagoon Room. Such friendly folks! Photo not mine but from Instagram.

Great Afternoon for a Cigar

Monday, July 24, 2019

Aloha shirt, exotica music, an Asylum 13 cigar, and a Hula Hula cocktail.

Sat out in the backyard on a gorgeous summer afternoon. Dale and Athena joined me once Dale was back from a bike ride.

Cigar Time & Exotica Moderne

Friday, July 21, 2019

Within the last year or so a new magazine called Exotica Moderne has appeared on the polynesian pop scene.

The following is from their Facebook page:

"Exotica Moderne is a quarterly publication showcasing the new tiki and lowbrow art and artists, exotic cocktails, kustom kulture, music and more. Focusing on where these genres have been and where they are heading, Exotica Moderne features emerging artists as well as those spearheading these movements. Where all of these subcultures meet and intersect, Exotica Moderne covers next wave of tiki and lowbrow art."

The above just pretty much sums it all up. My take is that although it's a very fun magazine, the editing could be tightened up a bit. The design, on the other hand, is simply top drawer.

The magazine is published by House of Tabu. Issue # 4 includes a feature on Tiki Cat tiki bar in Kansas City, Missouri in addition to a nice article on Lowbrow artist Ken Ruzic.

Tiki Lights

Friday, June 21, 2019

Warren and I stopped by Michael's place for a pre-happy hour drink. We sat on his deck and I noticed the solar powered tiki lights. He said he got them at Menard's.

Lucky Cricket 4 for 2019 - With Mom

Friday, June 21, 2019

Took Mom to Lucky Cricket for lunch and she loved it. We shared some appetizers and the shrimp bowl. In the above picture we're having some soft serve for dessert. My tiki drink is in The Mystic mug by Joe Vitale.

The Evolution of Joe's Signature Tiki Cocktail

Friday, June 14, 2019

Warren's drink is on the left and mine on the right.

Warren and I had dinner tonight. We both had rum in our pre-dinner cocktails. Warren's typical cocktail includes Myer's rum, club soda, and some cherry syrup mixture he makes himself.

Behold, the Hula Joe

I've been working on my signature tiki cocktail for a while now and I think I've finally come up with the final product. It includes one part rum (I used Myer's), one part orange curaƧao (I used Pierre Ferrand, my favorite), and one part pineapple juice (Dole). I think I'm gonna call it the Hula Joe.
